Sivan
Sternbach

Sivan Sternbach is an Israeli artist and sculptor, best known for her work in sculpting balloons. She works closely with private collectors, design firms, and curators, with numerous exhibitions in Israel, London, and around the world.
In 2015, Sternbach’s balloon installation was featured at the Israel Museum in honor of its 50th birthday. In 2017, more than 100 balloons hand-sculpted by Sternbach were displayed in the 5th Avenue windows of luxury department store Bergdorf Goodman.
Her latest project, “Concealed Shoes”, involves sculpting a pair of ruined Chanel flats. Sternbach entitled the project “Concealed Shoes” after learning that it was common in the 14th-16th centuries to place old shoes in the walls of a house as a means of protection against evil spirits.

My pieces are continuously changing in details and form. I take deep pleasure in entering my studio every morning as if it is my first day there. My ceramics are the purest expression of how I live my life. I use everything I see, touch, and taste as inspiration, especially their playful and tactile characteristics. My pieces reflect my natural appetite for freedom and connection to the present moment. As a professional pastry chef, trained and certified by the French Culinary Institute in NYC, I feel a strong connection between making pastry and shaping clay – both naturally similar and endlessly satisfying processes. I draw deep pleasure from watching people’s unabashed reactions to my pieces. My floating balloons – in various sizes, colors, and levels of inflation – seem to trigger viewers’ positive childhood memories. I’ve come to realize they have the potential to capture a person’s fleeting, happy memory and render it timeless.
