Shpilsher

Keren Shpilsher (b. 1977) is an active multidisciplinary artist who lives in Kfar Tavor in the North of Israel. Shpilsher is a graduate of the visual communication department at Vital College of Design (now Shenkar College).
In 2002, upon graduating from Vital, she won the Promising Artist Award and a grant from the Israel State Lottery (Mifal HaPais). In 2003, as part of the Israel Lottery’s “First Portrait Prize” exhibition, Shpilsher presented an ambitious exhibition at the Tel Aviv Museum that immediately placed her at the center of the Israeli art world: her exhibition “Queen of the Class”, which dealt with the disparity between the different classes that exist among schoolchildren. Through colorful, seemingly childish, and seductive images, the viewer was drawn into the works, discovering situations of absurdity, difficulty, hidden violence, and pain. Shpilsher’s background in visual communication, instead of the more-typical fine arts, strengthened her ambition as an artist to eliminate the dichotomy between the disciplines. As a visual designer, winning the “First Portrait Prize” was a surprise, a dream come true, and a triumph of her unique approach.
Shpilsher has exhibited at the Tel Aviv Museum, the Nachum Gutman Museum, the Herzliya Museum, and at alternative art venues in the periphery of Israel.

Over the last decade, after developing a rich artistic language and a unique and identifiable fingerprint, I have continued to create in a variety of media, presenting my works at hundreds of exhibitions. My artistic language integrates and references comics, art history, Judaica, consumer and pop culture, current affairs, social injustices, and folklore, which all undergo an exciting and renewing processing.
