Shmueli

Itay Shmueli (b. 1981) grew up in Or Yehuda, Israel. He studied and developed his skills as a painter at HaMidrasha Art School (2006-2009).
Shmueli’s works are derived from the ordinary life routine and surroundings, in which he captures certain intimate, contemplative moments and situations and projects them into paintings. Shmueli primarily works with oil on canvas, though he has lately been using monotype technique on paper for looser, more intuitive results.
He has exhibited in solo and group shows around Israel, including at the Maya Gallery in Tel Aviv and the Haifa Museum of Art, and his works are included in collections in Israel and abroad.

My body of work from the past six years began with small, quick sketches derived from observations of the home environment and its inhabitants — mainly my partner and my young son, who was born in 2019. Our confinement at home during the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to a continuous search for simple compositions and situations, resembling stories of everyday life and daily gestures that are given a stage and focus through drawing and sketching. One example is my series of drawings titled "Soothing the Baby." What began as a somewhat amusing way to pass the time while soothing the infant in my arms, through drawing in front of the mirror, evolved into an ongoing body of work where I experiment with a simple, continuous line to capture varying expressions and poses.
