Based on historical/archival materials, my paintings evoke the power of (collective) memory through critical engagement with architecture and female representation. My work manifests historical buildings immersed in meaning that no longer exists, and symbolic representation of the female body throughout history. The paintings are made of different layers, each applied on the surface distinctively. The layers do not merely cover one another, but allow access to former layers, such that no layer dominates the painting exclusively. Rather than a coherent narrative, a complex visual and emotional image invites the viewers to regenerate the images in their minds. In my multi-layered painting process, I blend images of architectural renderings from my childhood with vegetation and the female body. This collage-like technique blurs the boundaries between place, body, and memory in uncanny ways, creating a profound sense of “being in a place” while concurrently conveying a feeling of instability and displacement.
