I define myself as a “landscape artist”, and insist on using this traditional, old fashion term because the landscape is a politically-charged paradigm for me.
I live in a controversial region, where land and borders are the center of debate and violence. The Holy Land is not an abstract term, but a continuous situation of ongoing conflict. For me, landscape is never neutral, even though it is supposedly accessible to everyone. The landscape is never still, never quiet – it resonates, trembles, and cracks under the gaze of the viewer.
I create site-specific painting installations that strive to represent these undercurrent layers, revealing the imagined past buried under the ground, exposing the charade of history which is always present. In that sense, I feel that being a landscape artist allows me to be contemporary.
Each project begins with wondering; taking photos, painting paintings, drawing maps and interacting with the people on the site, slowly accumulating into what will become the exhibition. My recent projects have also included floor installations involving sound and video, with painting directly on the walls of the exhibition space.
